About Most Haunted Places

Most Haunted Places is an independent field guide to ghosts, poltergeists and haunted places. It starts where you are: pick your state or country and see the places with a ghost story attached — the prisons, hotels, mansions, battlefields and lighthouses — along with the real history behind each one, how to visit and the latest local news.

We cover all 50 US states and dozens of countries, from the Winchester Mystery House and Eastern State Penitentiary to the Tower of London and Edinburgh’s vaults, along with the local legends every town seems to have. The site is free to use and supported by advertising. Our sister sites are Cryptid Map and The Phenomenon Files.

How we research

Every haunting file is written from published sources — newspapers, historical societies, museums, the sites’ own records, books, academic papers and government archives — and lists them at the bottom of the page. We write in our own words and never copy articles.

History comes first. Most ghost stories grow out of real people and real events, and where a famous legend isn’t supported by the record — an invented murder, a person who never existed, a death toll inflated for a tour — we say so. The victims of crimes, slavery, epidemics and institutions were real people, and we write about them with dignity.

We report claims as claims. Each file sets out what visitors and staff report and what could explain it — drafts, infrasound, carbon monoxide, sleep paralysis, suggestion, hoaxes, marketing — so readers can make up their own minds. We never publish private home addresses, and we never encourage trespassing.

The news desk gathers headlines from public news indexes every day and sorts them by haunting and place automatically. Each headline links to its publisher. Videos are embedded from the Internet Archive or from the creators’ own channels; we upload only footage that is public domain, Creative Commons or our own.
