Haunted places in Jamaica
What are the most haunted places in Jamaica? The best-known is Rose Hall Great House.
Jamaica’s most famous ghost story belongs to Rose Hall, the Georgian great house above Montego Bay where the “White Witch” Annie Palmer is said to walk. It is a story invented in the 19th century and made famous by a 1929 novel: Jamaican archival research has shown that the real Annie Palmer murdered no one. The real history of Rose Hall, and of the island’s great houses, is the history of slavery and of the enslaved people who rose against it in the Christmas Rebellion of 1831–32.

The ghost lore of Jamaica
Jamaican folk belief has its own, much older understanding of the dead. Duppies – the spirits of the departed – feature in stories and customs with West African roots, including the Nine Night gatherings held after a death. These are living traditions, as are obeah and the island’s Afro-Christian faiths, and they deserve to be understood on their own terms rather than through the gothic lens of the White Witch legend.
For visitors, ghost tourism centres on the north coast’s restored great houses, which offer night tours alongside their histories.

- Port Royal
