Rockwood Museum

Also known as Rockwood Mansion, Rockwood Park and Museum

A Rural Gothic granite mansion near Wilmington where staff report running taps and radios, and where Ghost Hunters filmed its final investigation in 2016.

Rockwood is a granite country house on a wooded estate north of Wilmington, built between 1851 and 1854 for Joseph Shipley, a merchant banker who had spent most of his working life in Liverpool, England. Shipley commissioned the English architect George Williams to design it in the Rural Gothic style of an English manor, reportedly before he had even seen the site. The house is built of local Brandywine granite and has an attached conservatory, an early surviving example of its kind in the United States, set within English-style landscaping planted in the 1850s.

Shipley’s descendants kept the estate for more than a century. His great-nephew Edward Bringhurst Jr. inherited it in 1891 and moved his family in the following year; the Bringhursts, and later the Hargraves line, filled the house with furnishings spanning two centuries and an archive of letters and photographs that museum staff still draw on. The last family member, Nancy Sellers Hargraves, died in 1972 and left the property to a charity, and New Castle County took it over in the early 1970s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and opened to the public that year.

The ghost stories grew from the experiences of those who work there. A 1997 University of Delaware profile quoted staff and volunteers describing radios switching themselves on, doors moving, footsteps and a bathtub found running in the servants’ quarters. The director at the time, Jack Braunlein, described himself as a “ghost agnostic” and suggested that the house’s Gothic design and its dark, wooded setting shape how people interpret ordinary noises. Over the years popular tradition added a lady in white in the gardens, a man in black on a balcony and a ghost dog, and some retellings claim dozens of “entities”; these details come from tour literature and local press rather than from documented incidents.

Rockwood’s reputation reached a national audience in 2016, when the long-running series Ghost Hunters chose it for what Syfy’s recap called the series’ final hunt, an episode of season eleven titled “Manor of Mystery.” The team reported a cold presence in the attic, a physical shove, and communication with what they called a playful child spirit connected to the dining room, whom they identified as a boy named Eddie. The house had earlier been featured on the Biography Channel’s My Ghost Story in 2011. The museum itself foregrounds its documented family history and Victorian-era collections, and its programming has at times leaned into seasonal ghost events.

What could explain it?

  • Staff and volunteers working alone in a large, dim, wood-panelled building are primed to interpret creaks, pipes and drafts as footsteps and voices.
  • Plumbing and electrical faults in a house of this age readily explain taps left running and radios coming on.
  • Television investigations use equipment (EMF meters, spirit boxes, REM pods) that has not been shown to detect spirits, and results depend on interpretation by the participants.
  • The identities given to the ghosts – “Eddie Jr.”, the Bringhurst relatives – appear to come from family history and tour stories, suggesting suggestion shapes who the ghost is thought to be.
