Haunted places in Colombia
What are the most haunted places in Colombia? The best-known is La Llorona.
Colombia’s ghost lore is told mostly through its regional legends, which vary from the Caribbean coast to the Andes and the Llanos. La Llorona wanders its rivers too; in Antioquia she is sometimes known as María Pardo, and in the southern city of Pasto her stories are linked to cemeteries and to the night of 31 October.

The ghost lore of Colombia
She shares the countryside with other famous figures of Colombian folklore: La Patasola, a one-legged woman of the forests; La Madremonte, guardian of the mountains; and El Mohán, a spirit of the rivers of Tolima and Huila. These legends blend Indigenous, Spanish and African traditions and are still told in villages, schools and festivals, where they are part of living regional culture rather than tourist ghost stories.
In the cities, colonial quarters such as Cartagena’s walled city and Bogotá’s La Candelaria have their own legends of the Inquisition, of convents and of old mansions, and are popular settings for night-time walking tours.
