Haunted places in Egypt

What are the most haunted places in Egypt? The best-known is Baron Empain Palace.

Egypt has some of the oldest recorded beliefs about the dead anywhere – but its modern ghost lore is less about pharaohs than about jinn and abandoned houses. Jinn, spirits made of smokeless fire who are mentioned in the Qur’an, are part of mainstream belief for many Egyptians, and stories of a house “inhabited” by them are told in every city. Cursed tombs and mummies, by contrast, are mostly a Western invention, popularised by newspapers after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

The ghost lore of Egypt

The country’s most famous haunted building is a 20th-century one: the Baron Empain Palace in Heliopolis, a Belgian industrialist’s Angkor-inspired mansion that stood empty for half a century and collected stories of deaths in its tower, lifts and stairwells, none of them supported by records. In 1997 its reputation became bound up with a national panic over “devil-worshipping” heavy-metal fans, which collapsed when the charges were dropped. Since its restoration in 2020 it has become a museum and a symbol of Heliopolis.

Egyptian writers and journalists list other “haunted houses” in Cairo and Alexandria – villas in Zamalek, an old palace turned hospital in Helwan, a tower block in Alexandria that took six decades to finish – most of them private or closed buildings whose stories circulate by word of mouth. Visitors should treat them as urban legends and never enter abandoned or private property.

Ghost-hunting hotspots

Baron Empain’s garden city of 1906, with its basilica crypt, Belle Époque arcades and the restored Hindu-style palace at its centre.

  • Zamalek, Cairo

  • Helwan

A palace once used by King Farouk’s family, later a hospital, said by residents to show flickering lights and voices at night.

  • Alexandria

The Roushdy Building, known locally as “the ghost house”, is the subject of several conflicting local legends.
