Haunted places in Michigan

What are the most haunted places in Michigan? The best-known are Eloise, Paulding Light and The Whitney.

Michigan’s ghost lore stretches from Gilded Age Detroit to the forests of the Upper Peninsula. In the city, lumber and automobile fortunes built mansions that now serve dinner with a side of ghost stories; west of downtown, the vast Eloise complex – poorhouse, hospital and asylum for a century and a half – left one brooding building and thousands of numbered graves. Far to the north, a mysterious light over a forest valley near Paulding has drawn crowds of watchers since the 1960s.

The ghost lore of Michigan

The history behind the stories is that of the Great Lakes: Anishinaabe homelands, fur-trade posts, lumber camps and mining towns, shipwrecks on Superior and Huron, and the industrial boom that made Detroit one of the richest cities in the world. Michigan’s lighthouses and Mackinac Island’s historic hotels add a maritime layer, and the state is unusual in having a classic ghost light that university students actually solved.

Ghost hunters head to Detroit’s Midtown and historic districts, to Westland’s Eloise site, to Mackinac Island and Great Lakes lighthouses in summer, and north to the Paulding Light viewing area. Eloise Cemetery is fenced and closed; respect no-trespassing signs at former hospitals and abandoned buildings.
