Haunted places in Nebraska
What are the most haunted places in Nebraska? The best-known are The Ghost of Clara Mills, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Joslyn Castle and Hummel Park.
Nebraska’s ghost stories gather where its people did: along the Missouri River bluffs in Omaha, on the campuses and old streets of Lincoln, and in the brick downtowns of railroad towns across the plains. Many are tied to the Gilded Age fortunes that built Omaha – its mansions, theaters and warehouses – and to the institutions that followed, from schools to museums.

Haunted places in Nebraska
The Ghost of Clara Mills, Nebraska Wesleyan University
In 1963 a Nebraska Wesleyan secretary said she saw a long-dead music teacher – and the campus as it looked decades earlier – in an empty office. Regional legendJoslyn Castle
Omaha’s 1903 Scottish baronial mansion, built for George and Sarah Joslyn, where staff and guests tell of a woman on the stairs and music in empty rooms. Local legendHummel Park
A wooded Omaha park whose legends – albino attackers, “hanging trees,” uncountable stairs – have been told since the 1960s and have no basis in the record. Hoax / debunkedThe ghost lore of Nebraska
The state’s most famous case is also one of America’s oddest: in 1963 a secretary at Nebraska Wesleyan University said she walked into an office and saw a music teacher who had died 23 years earlier, along with a view of the campus as it once was. Lincoln writer Alan Boye later collected that story and dozens more in A Guide to the Ghosts of Lincoln, and it remains a touchstone for “time slip” stories nationwide.
Omaha has the most active ghost scene, with October events at Joslyn Castle, cemetery and “haunted hike” tours, and a museum devoted to supposedly cursed objects. It also has Hummel Park, the woods whose lurid teenage legends have been told for decades – and thoroughly taken apart by local historians.
