Haunted places in Philippines
What are the most haunted places in Philippines? The best-known are Balete Drive and Diplomat Hotel (Dominican Hill).
Ghost stories are part of everyday life in the Philippines. Pre-colonial belief in anito and spirits of nature blends with Catholic tradition, and almost every town has its white lady, its engkanto living in a great tree, and its tales of the shape-shifting aswang. Families gather to remember the dead at Undas, on 1 and 2 November, when cemeteries fill with candles and picnics.

The country’s best-known haunted road is Balete Drive in Quezon City, whose white lady has been part of Manila taxi lore since the 1950s – and whose origin a veteran journalist traced in 2021 to a real 1949 road accident nearby. In the mountain city of Baguio, the ruined Diplomat Hotel on Dominican Hill, a former Dominican retreat used by Japanese forces in the Second World War, is the most famous haunted building in the islands.
The violence of the Japanese occupation and the 1945 battles for Manila and Baguio underlies many Philippine ghost stories, and heritage advocates warn that the “haunted” label can overshadow real history. Ghost tours, TV specials and Halloween features keep the stories alive, but many sites are private homes or heritage properties, so it is best to visit by day and with respect.
