Haunted places in Poland

What are the most haunted places in Poland? The best-known is Czocha Castle.

Poland’s castles are its ghost country. Czocha Castle, a fairy-tale fortress on a lake in Lower Silesia rebuilt in the 1910s, tells of a White Lady, a walled-up child and a ‘Well of Unfaithful Wives’, and runs night tours to match. In the south, the ruins of Ogrodzieniec on the Eagles’ Nests trail are said to be prowled by a black dog dragging a chain – the soul, legend says, of a hated castellan of Kraków.

The ghost lore of Poland

Polish folklore adds Slavic spirits such as the strzyga and the upiór, early forms of the vampire, and an old tradition of commemorating the dead on All Saints’ Day and Dziady, the ancestral feast that Adam Mickiewicz turned into a national drama.

Castle night tours, legend trails and Kraków’s ghost walks are the main draws for visitors.
