Haunted places in Slovakia

What are the most haunted places in Slovakia? The best-known is Čachtice Castle.

Slovakia’s darkest legend centres on the ruins of Čachtice Castle, where Countess Elizabeth Báthory was confined after her arrest in 1610 on charges of torturing and killing young women in her service. She died there in 1614. Historians still debate the case, but agree that the famous tale of her bathing in blood was invented more than a century later – and ghost stories of the ‘Blood Countess’ cling to the ruin.

The ghost lore of Slovakia

The country’s many castles keep the theme alive: Bojnice hosts an International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits, Orava Castle served as the backdrop for the 1922 vampire film Nosferatu, and Trenčín has its romantic legend of a well dug for love.

Castle festivals, night tours and the Báthory trail are the main attractions for ghost-minded visitors.
