Haunted places in Italy
What are the most haunted places in Italy? The best-known are Poveglia, Castello di Montebello (Azzurrina) and Beatrice Cenci and the Ponte Sant’Angelo.
Italy’s ghost stories often grow from very old history – and sometimes from very new marketing. Poveglia, a small island in the Venetian lagoon, served as a quarantine station from 1793 and later as a home for elderly people, but its reputation as the world’s most haunted island largely dates from a 2009 American TV episode; Venetians know it today as a community park won back from privatisation. Near Rimini, the castle of Montebello tells of Azzurrina, an albino girl said to have vanished in 1375, though the story appears in print only in 1989.

Rome’s most enduring ghost is Beatrice Cenci, the young noblewoman executed beside Castel Sant’Angelo in 1599 after killing her abusive father, who is said to return to the bridge on the eve of her death each September. Italian skeptics, notably the CICAP committee, have investigated several of these legends and are part of the story too.
Ghost walks are popular in Venice, Rome and Turin – long nicknamed the ‘magic city’ – and many castles in Emilia-Romagna and the Marche offer night tours.
