Dumas Beach
Also known as Dumas, Dumas Sea Face
A black-sand beach outside Surat said to be an old cremation ground, where night visitors tell of whispers, laughter and howling dogs.
Dumas is Surat’s seaside: a long, dark-sanded shore on the Arabian Sea about 21 km southwest of the city, near the mouth of the Tapi river. By day it is one of the busiest leisure spots in south Gujarat, with snack stalls famous for tomato bhajiya, the Dariya Ganesh Temple beside the main beach, and crowds of families at sunset. Gujarat Tourism markets it for its unusual black sand and lists visiting hours as dawn to dusk.
Its other reputation began as local talk and spread through Indian travel sites and “most haunted” lists. The core claim – repeated widely but never documented – is that the shore was once used by Hindus for cremation, and that the darkness of the sand is ash. Some tellers add that communities who were historically denied cremation rites buried their dead nearby instead – a reminder that ghost lore often carries real memories of caste discrimination. From these beginnings come stories of restless spirits who did not find release.
No historical record has been published that confirms a large cremation ground on the beach itself, and the colour has a plainer explanation: the sand here is rich in dark, iron-bearing minerals, as on many volcanic and river-fed coasts. The legend’s more practical warning – that people who walk too far out at night do not come back – fits a coastline with strong tides and soft mudflats. Even writers who repeat the stories tend to note that the supernatural accounts are unverified.
The beach is now being remodelled. In March 2026 the Surat Municipal Corporation opened the first package of its Dumas Sea Face development, a promenade-and-gardens scheme beside the Dariya Ganesh Temple. Cremation is a sacred rite in Hinduism, and the temple is an active place of worship; visitors curious about the legend are asked to respect both.
What people report
Visitors and online accounts describe whispered voices and laughter on an empty shore, a sense of being urged to leave, white figures and drifting lights, and dogs that bark or howl at nothing after dark. A common claim is that people who stroll the beach late at night go missing. None of these reports has been documented beyond anecdote.
Where and when
Stories focus on the darker stretches of beach away from the lit promenade and food stalls, and on the hours after sunset, when the beach officially closes.
Timeline of the haunting
- 2026Official hours: dawn to dusk Surat, Gujarat
Gujarat Tourism’s page for the beach gives visiting hours as dawn to dusk and presents the black sand as the main attraction, with no mention of the legend.
- 8 March 2026The Dumas Sea Face opens Surat, Gujarat
Package 1 of the Surat Municipal Corporation’s Dumas Sea Face Development Project opens to the public, with the ceremony held near the Dariya Ganesh Temple. The scheme reshapes the seafront that the ghost stories grew up around.
What could explain it?
- The black colour comes from dark, iron-rich mineral sand, not ash; similar sand occurs on many coasts with no cremation history.
- Strong tides and mudflats along this stretch of the Gulf of Khambhat coast are a real danger at night, which may lie behind the “people go missing” warnings.
- Wind, surf and distant voices carry strangely along an open, unlit shore, and dogs that live on the beach bark at people, animals and each other.
- No published record confirms that the beach was a large cremation ground; the story spread mainly through travel blogs and listicles that repeat one another.
Ghost tours, books and screen
Dumas appears on nearly every online list of India’s haunted places, usually beside Bhangarh Fort, and is a favourite subject for Gujarati YouTubers and travel bloggers. For most Surtis, though, it is simply the city beach, best known for its food stalls and sunsets.
